I'm a PhD Candidate in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at University of California, Irvine. Before coming to UCI, I completed a BA in Philosophy at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkiye. I work primarily in the philosophy of science, particularly in scientific explanations and causal reasoning. I’m also interested in philosophy of social science, evolutionary biology, philosophy of language, and ethics.
I am an NSF Fellow for the interdisciplinary project, ``Genericity, Stability, and Structural Interactions," led by Kate Ritchie (UCI) and Ny Vasil (CSUEB). I was a Co-Director for LPS Summer Development Program (2023-25) and a Pedagogical Scholar in 2025.
My advisor is Lauren N. Ross.
I work primarily in the philosophy of science, particularly in scientific explanations and causal reasoning. I’m also interested in evolutionary biology, philosophy of social science, philosophy of language, and ethics.
In the philosophy of science, my work focuses on how explanations in different sciences (physical, biological, and social) work, especially how they fit into (and contribute to) our broader understanding of scientific explanations---e.g., causal and non-causal explanations, various causal structures, and distinct causal/explanatory concepts.
My work in the philosophy of language concerns speech acts and how different aspects of speech, such as intention, uptake, conventions, and norms, contribute to, and explain, the impact of speech, particularly regarding inequities in speech acts.
Additionally, I'm interested in the evolution of human moral cognition, specifically in the evolution of moral norm externalization.
Causal Explanation From a Conceptual Engineering Perspective: Non-Reductionism, Precision, and Pluralism (with Lauren N. Ross) [forthcoming]
Abstract: While projects in philosophy of science often focus on similar sorts of topics, there are often massive differences in how philosophers approach them. One approach that has enjoyed significant success—and that is modeled in the work of Wimsatt and others—involves taking a conceptual engineering perspective in analyzing these topics. In this paper, we outline main features of this conceptual engineering approach and use it to advance three emerging claims regarding causal explanation in biology and neuroscience. We suggest that causal explanation in these domains is non-reductive in contrast to always requiring (or improving with) lower-level details, that it is guided by precise explanatory targets in contrast to complete or multidimensional explanatory targets, and that it is pluralist in involving importantly distinct types of causal systems.
Causal Moderators and the Explanatory Role of Informal Social Structures [under review]
Abstract: There is growing interest in understanding social structural explanations and many have viewed social structures as the main causes of social outcomes. However, social structures come in various forms and the kinds of explanation they provide differ accordingly. This paper provides a distinction between formal and informal social structures, and identifies an important way in which informal social structures explain speech-related injustices, that is, by virtue of being causal moderators. This work has two aims: (1) to highlight unique features of causal moderators and (2) to identify cases in which informal social structures function as moderating causes.
Path Dependence and Explanation [draft available]
Abstract: Although many works in the social sciences focus on path dependence and emphasize its explanatory role, no satisfactory account has yet been provided to highlight its causal and explanatory features. In the social science literature, path dependence is often characterized as providing a type of narrative explanation. While path-dependent systems share some narrative elements, I argue that their explanatory power lies in distinct causal features. In this paper, I provide an analysis of the unique features of path-dependent systems and suggest a novel account of path-dependent explanations.
Intention and Uptake in Light of Moral Considerations [draft available]
Abstract: Current speech act theories focus on how to determine the illocutionary force of an utterance—whether the illocutionary force is determined by the speaker’s intention or the hearer’s uptake. Such a focus assumes that there is a single illocutionary force. This is problematic since certain injustices associated with speech acts can occur solely due to either the speaker’s communicative intention or the hearer’s uptake of the speaker’s intention. If a theory takes the illocutionary force to be determined by the speaker’s intention, it cannot account for the injustice that is constituted by the hearer’s uptake; if the theory takes the illocutionary force to be determined by the hearer’s interpretation, it cannot account for the injustice that is constituted by the speaker’s intention. Therefore, I argue that the nature of the illocutionary force of an utterance is twofold, reflecting the fact that both the speaker’s intention and the hearer’s uptake play distinct and indispensable roles, especially regarding injustices associated with speech acts. Accordingly, I suggest an alternative way of looking at illocutionary acts that focuses on the forces that constitute an illocutionary act: normative illocutionary force and descriptive illocutionary force.
Ice cream, Nazis, and the Adaptive Advantage of Externalization [draft available]
Abstract: To provide an evolutionary explanation of the human tendency to externalize moral norms, Stanford (2018) suggests an adaptive advantage of externalization: it provides an efficient and effective mechanism to protect our prosocial motivations from exploitation. Many have criticized this view, arguing that externalization is unnecessary to achieve the suggested adaptive advantage, given supposedly more plausible alternatives. Stanford provides an empirical argument against these criticisms. I argue that Stanford’s reply to critics fails for reasons he has previously highlighted in his critiques of others, and that his original position contains resources for an effective response to these criticisms.
